Winter Pests and What to Do About Them

For the most part, as the weather cools down, you don’t have to worry as much about pests. However, just because bugs and other critters aren’t as active during the winter doesn’t mean that they can’t pose a threat to you and your property.

This winter, be prepared and be proactive about your pest control solutions. Today we’re going to discuss the most common seasonal pests and how to make sure that they don’t pose a problem for you and your family.

Rats and Mice

Like us, rodents like places that are warm and dry. Unfortunately, your home can look especially inviting as the temperature drops outside. Rats love to nest in dark areas, like basements or crawlspaces. Mice, on the other hand, may settle in your attic or roof.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that mice and rats are two different species. For example, traps will typically work for mice, but rats will usually avoid them. Either way, though, both critters can multiply quickly, so you have to act fast to get rid of them.

Birds and Bats

Although you may not have to deal with these critters for most of the year, your chimney and attic can look more than appealing for these animals trying to get shelter from the cold. While they won’t be as invasive as other pests, you don’t want to deal with a nest of birds or bats in your home. Cover up any openings and check on your attic regularly to make sure no living beings are taking residence.

No matter the time of year, finding a nest of roaches can be unsettling. Unfortunately, these tiny creatures can squeeze into the smallest of spaces, and they multiply rapidly. If you notice any cockroaches around your home, chances are that you have a sizeable infestation. Traps and poison can be helpful, but you may have to do more to get rid of them altogether.

Bed Bugs

Unfortunately, more and more places are suffering from outbreaks of these dangerous critters. If you notice bed bugs in your home (or evidence of them, i.e., bites on your skin), then you have to take drastic action immediately. An infestation is hard to remove, especially if you wait to do anything about it.
