COVID-19 has put all of us into a new state of unknown. One area where people can find solace, however, is in the garden! Summer is always a great time to get outdoors and tend to your growing plants, even with a global pandemic. Unfortunately, unwanted guests sometimes arrive in the garden. Pests are a nuisance and tough to get rid of. Luckily, there are steps you can take to kicking them out of your garden.
Before getting into pest-control products with chemicals, there are natural approaches to getting rid of pests. Barriers can be used, such as nets and fences. This will stop larger pests, like raccoons or groundhogs, from getting in. There are also plenty of natural-traps that can be bought at the store and don’t contain chemicals. Of course, you could go around the garden by hand and pick them off, but that can be a little gross and tiresome.
If the natural approach is not working, chemical-based products could do the trick. First and foremost, make sure anything you buy is USDA-approved. Different products contain different chemicals for specific pests. Plus, they will vary in the toxicity level. It’s worth doing a little research into whatever product you plan on buying to make sure it will be a safe and effective solution.
Not every spray or liquid-based solution has to contain chemicals. Some don’t even have to be purchased if you have the right supplies at home. Garlic, hot peppers and baking soda are just a couple of items that can simply be mixed with water to form an effective pest-control spray. Another trick is to bury orange and banana peels into the soil. The nutrients in them are known to help kill off pests.
Keep an Eye Out
At the end of the day, you want to be vigilant about what’s going on in your garden. The faster you catch on to a potential pest infestation, the easier it will be to find a solution.
