Not all pests survive the winter. Those that survive usually do something called overwintering. It's a simple process for the insects: Find somewhere warm for the winter, and stay there until springtime. Some pests come indoors and find places to hide; others get stuck between the windows and die. Terminix has a few overwintering pests to look out for in Western Michigan this fall.
3 Fall Pests in Western Michigan
Multicolored Asian Lady Beetles
Asian lady beetles look very similar to ladybugs and share the same black spots on their wing cases and white marks behind the head. When comparing the two, look at the white marks. If the marks cover most of the area behind the head, it's an Asian lady beetle. The remaining black part looks like a "W" or an "M" depending on your viewpoint. These pests gather in large numbers and produce a foul odor when they're stressed.
Brown Marmorated Stinkbugs
The brown marmorated stinkbug hasn't always been in Michigan. Depending on where you live in the state, you may never see one. Those in Western Michigan who have stinkbugs in their home deal with an unpleasant odor as the pests fly and crawl in the room. The smell is amplified if you crush and kill the insect.
Box-elder bugs have elongated black bodies with red lines and red eyes. These bugs are more prevalent in yards with box-elder trees. If the pests invade your home, they look for spots in which to hide for the cold months. They'll camp out in boxes and in other out-of-the-way spaces. Though they don't cause any damage to your home, they will become a nuisance if they stay active while they're indoors.
