Strawberry Root Weevil Extermination

Adult strawberry root weevil’s are commonly found inside buildings in Michigan, and other northern states of the U.S. The strawberry root weevil, or Otiorhynchus Ovatus is a form of beetle. Although they are not harmful to the environment, people or household foundations, an infestation of strawberry root weevils can become a great nuisance to the owner and residents of an infested building.

Where Do They Live?

The larvae of the strawberry root weevil lives underground in soil, feeding on the roots of plants. Legless strawberry root weevil larvae feed on the roots of strawberry plants, evergreen bushes, and other edible plants, including raspberries and grapes. During the Summer adult weevils emerge from the soil and begin to feed on the leaves of the same plants. Strawberry root weevils are commonly confused with ticks; both are dark brown or black with hard shelled bodies; weevils and ticks can be differentiated by the weevil having six legs, and the tick eight.

In midsummer, usually between mid-June and mid-July the strawberry root weevil begins to migrate towards buildings; the reasons for the migration are unknown, although some experts believe the moisture of air conditioned buildings attract the insects in dry Summer months. In some cases, the migration can be large and become a great nuisance for residents. Home pest control methods can be time consuming and ineffective in removing large numbers of strawberry root weevils.

Homeowners often place small pans of water around their homes to catch weevils in; this home remedy catches only a small number of strawberry root weevils and requires the continual emptying and refilling of the water pans. Most home remedies, and store bought insecticides are not effective in halting the migration of weevils into a home. When using insecticides large areas of the foundations and lawn areas of a property must be treated; making it a time consuming task and expensive for homeowners to complete without professional pest control assistance.
