Carpenter Ants
Typically large ants. About 3/8 to 3/4 inch long. The color varies from black, brown, to red or even variations of these colors. Most common are black. They have large mandibles on the front of the head. Used for defense and for tearing at wood or other materials.
Habitat: The colony must have a constant source of moisture to survive, typically in dead wood outside. This would include dead limbs, stumps, tree holes, landscape timbers, etc. Indoors, a colony will have to be near a water leak or overly wet area, roof leak, or a poorly ventilated crawlspace or attic.
